Beyond the Pearl Earring: New Insights into the Work of Johannes Vermeer

Join Larissa Bailiff, art historian and longtime lecturer at the Museum of Modern Art, as she explores the secrets behind the works of 17^th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. Known for his iconic image of the girl with a pearl earring and other mesmerizingly detailed scenes of daily life, Vermeer’s artistic practice and legacy have been the subject of much speculation and study.

Inspired by the extraordinary Vermeer exhibition on view at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which features five important works from New York collections, Ms. Bailiff’s talk will consider surprising information and new scientific analysis as well as some ways in which Vermeer’s art continues to figure prominently in popular culture – as the stuff of movies, memes, and even Legos.
